April 18 (UPI) -- A Gallup poll shows that a majority of Americans think wealthy people and corporations pay too little in federal taxes.

The poll shows 63 percent of Americans said they think upper-income people pay too little, whereas 10 percent think they pay too much and 24 percent think they pay their fair share

The poll also shows 67 percent of Americans said they think corporations pay too little, as opposed to 9 percent who think they pay too much and 19 percent who think they pay their fair share

The results come as Republicans in Congress and President Donald Trump's administration work to enact tax reform. U.S. Secretary of Treasury Steven Mnuchin on Monday insisted tax reform would occur before 2018.

Of other income groups, 6 percent of Americans said they think middle-income people pay too little in federal taxes, as opposed to 51 percent who think they pay too much and 40 percent who think they pay their fair share.

For lower-income people, 14 percent of Americans think they pay too little, whereas 48 percent think they pay too much and 35 percent think they pay their fair share.

"The view that middle-income people pay too much in taxes has been higher each of the past two years -- at just over 50 percent -- than at any point since the George W. Bush tax cuts went into effect in the early 2000s," Gallup said in a statement.
