April 8 (UPI) -- A fitness trainer at a gym in Coral Gables, Fla., opened fire, wounding two coworkers before he turned the gun on himself on Saturday, witnesses said.
The Miami Herald cited multiple witnesses who were members at Equinox, a high-end gym, who identified the shooter as Abeku Wilson, 33, a trainer there. Witnesses said Wilson had met with management earlier in the day and seemed agitated before he walked in the front door of the gym about 1 p.m., which is attached to a shopping mall, brandished a handgun, pointed it directly at two employees behind the front desk and opened fire.
Witnesses said one of the victims appeared to be unconscious while another was alert and talking. Police did not offer an update on either victim's condition. They were flown by helicopter to an area hospital.
Coral Gables police responded, placing stores inside the adjacent mall on lockdown. Members of the gym dressed only in towels fled Equinox and took shelter in nearby stores.
Witnesses described Wilson, a tall, muscular man, as the gym's most popular trainer who was known for his well-kept appearance. According to a page on a modeling agency website with whom Wilson had worked, he is a native of Boston who graduated from the University of Miami.
