March 30 (UPI) -- American Airlines said first officer William "Mike" Grubbs died after a medical issue during landing at New Mexico's Albuquerque International Sunport.
The captain of the Boeing 737-800 aboard Flight 1353 from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport to Albuquerque landed safely at 3:33 p.m. on Wednesday after Grubbs became incapacitated about 2 miles from the airport.
The captain declared an emergency citing a "medical issue." After landing, the plane was taxied to a gate and paramedics responded to perform CPR. Grubbs was declared dead about an hour after the plane landed.
The Federal Aviation Administration said it would "follow up with the airline" to determine what occurred.
"American Airlines is deeply saddened by the death of first officer William 'Mike' Grubbs," American Airlines said. "We're taking care of first officer Grubbs' family and colleagues and our thoughts and prayers are with them them during this time."
