March 20 (UPI) -- A former mixed martial arts star was convicted by a Las Vegas jury Monday on 29 of 34 felony charges in connection to the 2014 attack of an ex-girlfriend.
War Machine, a former UFC fighter, was found guilty of charges that include sexual assault, kidnapping and battery -- but the jury deadlocked on two charges of attempted murder.
War Machine, who legally changed his name from Jonathan Koppenhaver in 2008, broke into the Las Vegas home of his former girlfriend, Christy Mackinday, in August 2014, and beat her and her new boyfriend. He was later arrested in California.
While he was at large, he attempted to clarify what had happened on his Twitter page.
"I'm not a bad guy, I went to surprise my [girlfriend], help her set up her show and to give her an engagement ring and ended up fighting for my life," one tweet said.
"I only wish that man hadn't been there and that Christy and I would be happily engaged. I don't know [why] I'm so cursed. One day truth will come out," another read.
Mackinday testified during the trial and described the attack, and also told jurors she suffered additional physical abuse by the 35-year-old fighter during their relationship.
After the attack, Mackinday described the attack on her Twitter page, saying War Machine beat her savagely -- resulting in numerous injuries -- and threatened to rape her during the hourslong ordeal.
He faces life in prison at his sentencing on June 5.
