Feb. 20 (UPI) -- Tens of thousands of Americans marked Presidents' Day on Monday by underscoring their opposition to current occupant of the White House.

Demonstrators in New York, Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and several other major cities hit the streets, chanted and held signs for what was informally called "Not My President's Day."

Those words have comprised a consistent mantra among Trump opponents ever since he defeated Hillary Clinton 15 weeks ago.

In New York, the president's hometown, protesters gathered at Trump Tower to air their grievances. Nearly 50,000 New Yorkers indicated online that they would participate in the event.

"I'm really concerned for where our country is headed," resident Sayief Leshaw said. "We have sold out to corporate interests, and Donald Trump's policies are downright offensive."

"NO! We refuse to accept a fascist America," one sign declared.

In Washington, demonstrators sang "This Land is Your Land" in DuPont Circle, about a mile away from Trump's new home.

One demonstrator carried a sign that read, "My president? Nyet!" -- a reference to Trump's desire to improve U.S. relations with Russia.

Opponents in Chicago also gathered near Trump Tower there, and Angelenos rallied outside of Los Angeles City Hall with the chant of, "Resist!"

Some protesters also gathered at airports nationwide to oppose Trump's order to temporarily close U.S. borders to refugees and immigrants, an action that remains blocked in federal court.

Presidents' Day commemorates the birth of first U.S. President George Washington, but is often observed to honor all past American commanders in-chief.
