Accused San Antonio cop killer got married between shooting, arrest

By Andrew V. Pestano

SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- Otis Tyrone McKane, the man accused in the ambush-style fatal shooting of San Antonio police detective Benjamin Marconi, got married after the killing but hours before his arrest, a marriage certificate shows.

McKane, 31, is charged with capital murder for the shooting of Marconi during a traffic stop on Sunday morning. The officer was shot twice in the head while he wrote a traffic ticket in his vehicle.

McKane was arrested Monday afternoon, hours after he married 27-year-old San Antonio resident Christian Chanel Fields.

A judge granted the pair a marriage license and married the couple soon after -- waiving Texas' 72-hour waiting period.

Spousal privilege laws prohibiting married couples from testifying against the other would not apply to this case because the crime was committed before McKane married, Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Nico LaHood said.

After his arrest, McKane said he was upset over multiple custody battles and for not being allowed to see his son.

"I lashed out at somebody that didn't deserve it," McKane told reporters. "I'm sorry."

San Antonio police Chief William McManus said McKane likely did not have a specific target.

"I think the uniform was the target, and the first person who happened along was the person he targeted," McManus said Monday.
