LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 (UPI) -- The Los Angeles Fire Department on Monday said firefighters rescued four people from the Los Angeles River after rising waters stranded the group amid heavy rain and swift currents in Atwater Village.

The rescue efforts began at about 2:45 a.m. local time after officials were told a group was stranded on a small island in the river. The Los Angeles Fire Department dispatched ground and air personnel to the scene.

The victims were carried across the river in a raft to safety. The river's water current was moving at speeds up to 35 mph, officials said.

"All four patients rescued and brought back across the river to safety. Awaiting firefighter paramedics assessed them medically and determined they were not injured," the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement. "However [they] are being treated for exposure to the cold and wet environment, and are being transported to local hospitals in fair condition."
