WASHINGTON, Nov. 9 (UPI) -- News of Donald Trump's election as president sparked protests in the streets early Wednesday, including some vandalism but most were generally peaceful.
Due to the late hour that Trump was projected to become the nation's 45th president, most of the demonstrations occurred on the West Coast, where Hillary Clinton was easily projected the winner in California, Oregon and Washington.
At Trump's future home, the White House, about 1,000 people gathered even before he was declared the president-elect. The demonstrators included about 20 Black Lives Matter supporters. Others protested Trump's immigration policies.
In Los Angeles, around 1,500 gathered at UCLA at 1 a.m. after Trump delivered his victory speech in New York. A Trump piñata was set on fire in a trash can.

N.J. Omorogieva, 19, told the Los Angeles Times she spotted the crowd when she was walking home. She said she was "heartbroken" by the election's result.
"Of course I joined in," she said. "To give hugs to people who were overcome by devastation."
A crowd gathered near Los Angeles' City Hall where a fence was scrawled with graffiti.
It was a different scene at the president-elect's star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood. About 30 Trump supporters posed for pictures and chanted victory slogans, including "This is our president." A small group of counter-protesters was shouted down.
On the La Jolla campus of University of California -- San Diego, about 500 students and chanted Trump's name with an expletive.
At University of California, Santa Barbara, hundreds marched near the campus. "Not my president. Not my president," some chanted.
In Oakland, a window at the Oakland Tribune newsroom was smashed, and trash containers were ignited, according to the East Bay Times.
A pedestrian was hit by a car on Highway 24 after protesters blocked the highway. And a Bay Area Rapid Transit Station was closed because of small fires.
In San Jose, Calif., several hundred people were peaceful at San Jose State's Olympic Black Power Statue to rally against Trump. The crowd shouted "We are the change. Si se puede" as a Mexican flag was on display.
In Seattle, police closed a street after protesters blocked an intersection.
In Portland, Ore., more than 100 demonstrators also blocked traffic at they marched to Portland State University.
"We are making noise. We are telling Donald Trump that we don't like that he's here. I feel like we're doomed. This can't be real," one activist told KGW- TV.
