WASHINGTON, Nov. 4 (UPI) -- A narrow majority of Americans said they want Republicans to be in control of Congress if Hillary Clinton is elected president, but are split on control of Congress if Donald Trump wins.

According to a new Gallup poll, 52 percent of registered voters said they would prefer divided government if Democrats remain in the White House, while 42 percent said they would want Democrats in charge of both branches. If Trump were to win, 46 percent said they would prefer Democrats to hold power in Congress, while 48 percent said they would want a Republican-led legislative branch.

The divided government sentiment could come from voters' perceptions of the two candidates. Clinton is described as "liberal" or "very liberal" by 58 percent, while Trump is viewed as "conservative" or "very conservative" by 47 percent.

The Gallup survey was completed Oct. 27 to 28 and included 945 registered voters. It has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.
