Police guarding possible targets on Okla. fugitive's 'hit list,' officials say

By Doug G. Ware

OKLAHOMA CITY, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The Oklahoma man accused of killing two family members last weekend is still on the run and police are now guarding others who authorities believe might be additional targets on a "hit list."

Multiple law enforcement agencies are engaged in the manhunt for Michael Dale Vance, which has spread across the state of Oklahoma and reached beyond state lines. Authorities are looking into the possibility that he might be headed to Las Vegas.

According to investigators, Vance killed an aunt and uncle on Sunday and injured two police officers before making his escape.

The 38-year-old fugitive was in his fourth day on the run Wednesday and authorities fear he might be determined to inflict more harm before he is captured.

Earlier, police said Vance has the AIDS virus and might be trying to spread it to unsuspecting victims. He was shedding blood from gunshot wounds when he escaped officials' grasp on Sunday.

Officers have been receiving tips about Vance's possible whereabouts and destination since Monday. Some of the information has alerted authorities to the possible existence of a "hit list" -- and some of those potentially on the list are now under police protection.

"Our No. 1 goal right now is to make sure there are no more victims," Oklahoma County Sheriff John Whetsel told the Oklahoman.

Officials are also gleaning information and possible clues from broadcasts Vance has been conducting on his Facebook page.

Vance, who was arrested in the past on charges of child sexual assault, has mentioned in the broadcasts that he was set up for that arrest and pledged revenge against those he believes railroaded him.

"Obviously, as long as he isn't apprehended, we're extremely concerned about those he may have indicated that he wishes harm to," Whetsel added. "Most of those are outside of Oklahoma County. Those law enforcement agencies are providing protection to those people."

Vance was last seen driving a gray 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse on Oklahoma's Interstate 40.
