EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A Connecticut neighborhood caught fire Tuesday after a small airplane fell from the sky, authorities said.
The Cessna aircraft crashed on Main Street in East Hartford. At least one of the two people on board was hospitalized, but alive.
"Our thoughts are with the people affected. It does not appear at this time that any Pratt & Whitney employees or contractors were involved," jet engine maker Pratt and Whitney, which is headquartered in East Hartford, said in a statement. "Additionally, there is no impact to our operation here in East Hartford other than restricted traffic flow to the facility's main entrance on Main Street. We stand ready to assist local officials as needed."
The pilot was hospitalized but the other person on board was initially unaccounted for, the Hartford Courant reported.
The cause of the plane crash was not immediately known.
Smoke and flames could be seen in the residential area on Main Street that was hit by the falling aircraft -- a scene slightly reminiscent of a crash involving a much larger American Airlines jetliner in the Queens section of New York City in November 2001.
It was unclear whether anyone on the ground was hurt, but officials said the crash did cause some power outages.
