LOS ANGELES, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Los Angeles police on Tuesday released a surveillance video showing the teen who was shot by police last weekend with what appears to be a gun.

The business surveillance video shows Carnell Snell Jr., 18, holding what appears to be a gun in his left hand as police chased him through a parking lot on Saturday, police Chief Charlie Beck said.

Snell first led police on a chase over what police believed was a stolen car. The car chase ended with Snell jumping out and leading police on a foot chase, where police reported seeing Snell turn toward police and pull the semiautomatic from his waistband, Beck said.

Police shot Snell twice. He died at the scene. The fully-loaded semiautomatic handgun was found next to Snell's body.

"Officers felt this was an imminent threat," Beck said at a press conference. There is no video of the actual shooting.

Snell's shooting ignited days of protests in Los Angeles, including one during a police commission meeting on Tuesday, that forced the board to relocate meeting into a closed session.

The video was released "to correct ... a faulty public record" and not to "denigrate" Snell, Beck said.
