NEW YORK, Sept. 23 (UPI) -- Federal prosecutors in New York have opened an investigation into accusations of sexting by former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner with a 15-year-old girl.

NBC News reported the latest alleged sexting scandal involves pornographic videos, requests for nudity and requests for masturbation with a teen. The New York Police Department and the FBI have also opened preliminary inquiries over the accusations the former New York Democratic congressman faces, CNN reported.

"I have repeatedly demonstrated terrible judgment about the people I have communicated with online and the things I have sent. I am filled with regret and heartbroken for those I have hurt," Weiner said in a statement, adding that he could have "likely been the subject of a hoax."

"I have no one to blame but me for putting myself in this position. I am sorry," Weiner said.

Weiner resigned from the U.S. House of Representatives after it was made public he sent lewd messages and photos to women online in 2012.

In late August, longtime Hillary Clinton aide Huma Abedin announced she and Weiner were separating after allegations he sent sexually suggestive photos again -- this time with an unidentified woman in her 40s described as divorced.
