California bans orca captivity and breeding

By Shawn Price

SACRAMENTO, Sept. 14 (UPI) -- California has become the first state in the country to ban the captivity and breeding of orcas for human entertainment.

The law, signed Tuesday by Gov. Jerry Brown, goes into effect in 2017 and begins to put an end to the controversial use of orcas -- also known as killer whales -- for human entertainment.

Beginning next June, the remaining captive orcas can only be used for educational purposes.

The law follows three years after the documentary Blackfish spotlighted the plight of Orcas in captivity in SeaWorld San Diego and other parks. In March, the theme park announced they would end their breeding program and shows featuring dolphins and orcas as entertainment.
