ALPINE, Texas, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- A teenage girl took a gun to a rural high school in west Texas on Thursday and shot another girl before shooting herself, authorities said.
The confrontation happened at Alpine High School Thursday morning, which prompted what officials called a "critical lockdown."
Authorities are trying to piece together the sequence of events and a motive why the female suspect would resort to such violence.
When the victim was shot, she ran into the street and was taken to the hospital. She was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
When officials later found the suspect dead inside the school, they initially believed she was a victim.
The Brewster County Sheriff's Office said the 14-year-old suspect had moved to the community with her family just six months ago.
A federal agent was also shot at the school, but investigators said later he was hit accidentally by gunfire from another responding officer, not the suspect.
The wounded agent was reported in stable condition later Thursday.
"I wish to extend prayers and sympathy to any victims' families and their loved ones who have been affected by this senseless act of violence," Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said.
The high school is located in Alpine, a town with about 6,000 residents 400 miles west of San Antonio.
