ATLANTIC CITY, N.J., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Two men have been arrested in connection with a robbery outside an Atlantic City casino that critically wounded a police officer and left one suspect dead.

Martell Chisholm, 19, of Millville, New Jersey, and Demetrius Cross, 28, of Bridgeton, N.J., each are charged with two counts of attempted murder, robbery and weapons offenses, Acting Atlantic City Prosecutor Diane Ruberton said late Saturday. The dead suspect was identified as Jerome Damon, 25, of Camden, N.J.

At 2:34 a.m. Saturday, two uniformed Atlantic City police officers on patrol observed a robbery that involved six men near the Caesars Atlantic City parking garage.

One unidentified male officer was shot and hurt as he got out of his vehicle. The second officer returned fire and struck one suspect.

The hurt officer was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center-City Division, where he remained in critical condition, according Sgt. Kevin Fair, a spokesman with the Atlantic City Police Department.

The three remaining people, whose names were not released, were victims of the armed robbery and not charged with a crime, investigators said.

State troopers caught Chisholm in Bridgeton and Cross in Millville, authorities said.

"These charges are the result of an unprecedented effort by law enforcement from local, county, state and federal agencies who worked tirelessly throughout the day to identify and locate the suspects," Ruberton said.

The city's popular outlet mall -- known as The Walk -- remained open Saturday.

On Thursday, Luis Maisonet, 55, of Somers Point, allegedly shot and killed Christopher Romero, 26, of Absecon, at the The Walk outlet mall in a domestic-related killing, police said.
