The Caribbean Fantasy, owned by America Cruise Ferries, was seen burning offshore, 1 mile from San Juan harbor. The Coast Guard reported that 512 people, passengers and crew members, were aboard the ship, a large car-and-passenger ferry which arrives in San Juan three times per week from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The fire started in the ship's engine room.

No injuries have been reported. The Coast Guard and local rescue teams are aiding the passengers.
