Barry, whose mother Efi Barry, died of leukemia in 2007, had reportedly struggled with drug use. He ran unsuccessfully in 2015 for the Ward 8 Council seat after his father died in 2014, coming in sixth in the race.

The elder Marion Barry, a Washington, D.C., mayor from 1979 to 1999, was videotaped and subsequently arrested in 1990 by the FBI on crack cocaine charges.

The younger Barry was transported to George Washington University Hospital where he was pronounced dead Sunday morning between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., WUSA9 reported.
