BATAVIA, N.Y., Aug. 12 (UPI) -- Two people found dead in a cemetery in New York state were struck by lightning, authorities said.
The bodies of Richard Garlock, 34, and Jenea Macleod, 32, were found under a tree in the Batavia Cemetery in western New York, near Buffalo about 12 hours after a storm passed over the area.
The injuries on the two bodies match those of a lightning strike, the Erie County Medical Examiner said, but an official cause of death is still to be determined.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration also confirmed lightning struck the area.
"I haven't seen anything like this before," Detective Eric Hill said. "In fact, the Erie County Medical Examiner's office hadn't seen anything like it either."
The official cause of Garlock and Macleod's deaths is expected to released in one to two months. There were no signs of drug use or foul play at the scene, police said.
