Delta Airlines delays spill into second day after computer outage

ATLANTA, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Many Delta Airlines flights will be canceled or delayed for a second day as the company's computer system problems continue to be worked out.

On Monday the airline lifted the ground stop with a limited number of departures, but warned customers of "large-scale cancellations." The company also issued travel waiver for customers.

Delta announced at least 100 more flights would be canceled on Tuesday and about 200 morning flights would be delayed. Refunds have been given to passengers whose flights were canceled or "significantly delayed"

"Those numbers could grow overnight as Delta works to reset the operation and get crews, aircraft and other elements of the operation back in place," the company said in a statement.

A power outage in Atlanta, where Delta is headquartered, began at about 2:30 a.m., which "impacted Delta computer systems and operations worldwide, resulting in flight delays." The company also said there may be some delay in the flight status synchronization between its website, its phone application and its Delta employees on the phone and in airports.

Delays are occurring from Pittsburgh, Miami, London and Tokyo. Delta on Twitter told one customer on Monday that "our systems are down everywhere."

Delta operates more than 15,000 daily flights with its airline partners to 335 destinations.
