WASHINGTON, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- Democrats have opened up a slight lead on the question of which party voters prefer to be in charge of Congress.

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found voters preferred Democrats by 4 percentage points over Republicans, 47 percent to 43 percent.

The last time the question was asked in June, the two parties were tied at 46 percent apiece, though Democrats had a similar edge in May.

Republicans are presently the majority in both the House and Senate, but face a difficult Senate landscape, defending nearly twice as many seats this cycle as Democrats. Democrats will need to flip five seats to their side and have Hillary Clinton win the presidential election in order to take back the Senate, or six seats if she does not win.

In the House, Republicans hold a lopsided 59-seat majority, the largest cushion either party has enjoyed since 1928.

The poll of 800 registered voters was conducted July 31-Aug. 3, and has a margin of error of 3.5 percentage points.
