NEW YORK, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump never got a letter from the National Football League complaining about presidential debates, the NFL said Sunday.

Trump's campaign is contending the Hillary Clinton campaign has rigged two of the presidential debates to conflict with NFL games, though the debates were scheduled a year ago. On Saturday, Trump also said the NFL sent him a letter complaining about the scheduling, something the NFL flatly denies.

"I'll tell you what I don't like," Trump told George Stephanopoulos on ABC's This Week. "It's against two NFL games. I got a letter from the NFL saying, " 'This is ridiculous.' "

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy, in turn, told CNN's Brian Stelter and others, "While we'd obviously wish the debate commission could find another night, we did not send a letter to Trump."

The nonpartisan Commission on Presidential Debates, founded in 1987, pointed out the schedule was made in September 2015 and said in a statement: "As a point of reference, in a four-year period, there are four general election debates ... and approximately 1,000 NFL games."
