Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee targeted in cyberattack

WASHINGTON, July 29 (UPI) -- The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced Friday its computers were targeted in a cyberattack.

Spokeswoman Meredith Kelly said the security breach "is similar to other recent incidents, including the DNC breach," a reference to a breach, earlier this year, at the Democratic National Committee. Although the DNC incident was traced to GRU, the Russian intelligence service, Kelly did not mention Russia in connection with the DCCC attack.

The DCCC is the primary fundraising group for Democrats running for seats in the House of Representatives. Discovery of the breach came Thursday, the evening that Hillary Clinton accepted the Democratic nomination at the party's convention in Philadelphia.

The intrusion into the DCCC's computers can be traced to Russian government hackers, several unnamed sources told the Washington Post. One source said, "It's part of a much, much broader campaign that is yet to fully be publicly revealed."

The FBI is investigating the DCCC breach, and is still probing the DNC incident, attempting to establish if emails obtained by Russian hackers are the same ones that were released by WikiLeaks last week.
