Al Gore endorses Hillary Clinton for president

PHILADELPHIA, July 25 (UPI) -- Although he won't be attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia this week, former party presidential candidate Al Gore voiced his endorsement of Hillary Clinton on Monday.

The 2000 Democratic nominee and vice president in the administration of Clinton's husband expressed his support on Twitter Monday afternoon.

"I am not able to attend this year's Democratic convention, but I will be voting for Hillary Clinton," Gore wrote. "Given her qualifications and experience -- and given the significant challenges facing our nation and the world, including, especially, the global climate crisis, I encourage everyone else to do the same."

The former Tennessee senator was once a veritable superstar in the Democratic Party's presidential ranks and still carries a lot of influence among voters. In the past decade, though, he has largely stayed out of politics and instead has led climate change efforts in the private sector.

Gore has said he's not able to attend the party's nominating convention in Philadelphia this week due to other commitments.

Gore was the Democratic nominee in 2000 and ultimately lost the tightest presidential election in American history to then-Texas governor George W. Bush.
