U.S. Parks Police called an early end to a large evangelical gathering on the National Mall in Washington on Saturday after hundreds of those in attendance suffered heat-related illnesses.

Multiple media reports indicate the event, Together 2016, was called off several hours early on Saturday after more than 350 people required medical attention after standing in the hot sun through the late morning and early afternoon.

Accuweather.com reports the nation's capital hit a high of 92 degrees Saturday, with high humidity forcing the heat index to touch 104.

The event drew tens of thousands to the mall and featured some 40 pastors and Christian music groups expected to speak and perform.

Parks police said the event was scheduled to go until 9 p.m., but they were forced to call it an early end by mid-afternoon when medical personnel on site began to be overwhelmed by the number of people complaining of heat-related illnesses.
