NTSB report: Freight train barreled through stop sign before head-on crash in Texas

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- A freight train failed to stop at a traffic signal before it barreled into an oncoming train in the Texas panhandle last month, a National Transportation Safety Board preliminary report said.

Three people, the engineer and conductor on the eastbound train and the conductor on the westbound train, were killed in the crash on June 28 about 8:20 a.m. Investigators found an eastbound BNSF Railway train failed to slow at a yellow signal and continued past a red stop signal and hit an oncoming BNSF train. The crash caused some $16 million in damages.

The report said the eastbound train was traveling about 65 mph when it went past the stop sign. The derailment caused the locomotives and several cars on both trains to derail.
