Holocaust Memorial, Arlington National Cemetery shun 'Pokemon Go' players

WASHINGTON, July 14 (UPI) -- The Holocaust Memorial Museum and Arlington National Cemetery in the Washington, D.C., area have made it clear they don't want Pokemon Go players on their premises.

Both national landmarks have released statements telling players to be please be respectful to the solemnity of the sites and avoid playing the game while visiting.

"Playing Pokemon Go in a memorial dedicated to the victims of Nazism is extremely inappropriate," Andy Hollinger, the museum's director of communications told CNNMoney.

He said the museum is trying to get its location permanently removed from the game.

A spokesperson for the most sacred resting ground for the nation's war dead tweeted "We do not consider playing Pokemon Go to be appropriate decorum on the grounds of ANC. We ask all visitors to refrain from such activity."

Both locations are a Pokestop, or a place where players can get free in-game items.

Pokemon Go has become a global phenomenon since it was released Friday.

It uses a global positioning system and mapping capabilities on people's smart phones to allow players roam the real world in augmented reality to hunt animated characters and stock up on supplies at Pokestops.
