CHARLESTON, S.C., June 28 (UPI) -- A report of shark bite closed the beach at Sullivan's Island, S.C., an island at the entrance to Charleston Harbor.

Emergency crews responded Monday afternoon after an unidentified man, 35, reported he was bitten on the foot by a three-foot-long shark in knee-deep water. The incident occurred about 50 feet from the shore. Assuming it was a shark bite, officials believe it was from a sand shark.

The man was hospitalized, although his injuries were non-life-threatening. He was vacationing in the area with his wife, officials said.

The beach was closed after the incident.

An alligator was removed from the area earlier in the day, WCIV-TV, Charleston, reported.
