WASHINGTON, June 23 (UPI) -- Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump had opposite reactions to Thursday's Supreme Court split decision that effectively overturned President Barack Obama's executive order barring the potential deportation of some 4 million illegal immigrants.

Clinton called it "heartbreaking" while Trump said the high court blocked "executive amnesty" for illegal aliens.

The 4-4 decision leaves in place a lower court's ruling that Obama's executive orders prohibiting deportation of millions of young people brought to the United States illegally as children are unconstitutional.

Both candidates weighed in on Twitter in the wake of the decision, followed by longer statements online.

"Today's 4-4 Supreme Court ruling has blocked one of the most unconstitutional actions ever undertaken by a president. The executive amnesty from President Obama wiped away the immigration rules written by Congress, giving work permits and entitlement benefits to people illegally in the country," Trump said in his statement.

Clinton said, "Today's deadlocked Supreme Court decision in Texas v. United States is a heartbreaking setback for families at risk of being torn apart by deportation."
