WASHINGTON, June 17 (UPI) -- Jeff Weaver, the campaign manager for Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, said Sanders is still an "active candidate" but will not lobby superdelegates to try to win the nomination.

Weaver told Bloomberg politics on Thursday night that Sanders is still campaigning despite the fact that Hillary Clinton has become the party's presumptive nominee and has won enough delegates to win the nomination at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia next month.

"The country has a lot of needs. Those needs have not changed just because the voting has stopped," Weaver said. "His life's work has been to address those problems, dealing with income inequality, dealing with a corrupt campaign finance system ... those issues still exist. The needs and desires of the people who supported him -- and the people who did not support him -- still exist. And he's going to continue working on that through the convention."

One thing Weaver said Sanders will not be working on, however, is lobbying Democratic superdelegates to come over to his side -- the only way he could feasibly still win the nomination.

"We are not currently lobbying superdelegates," he said. "I don't anticipate that'll start anytime soon."

Despite that, Weaver was asked on MSNBC's Morning Joe on Friday whether Sanders was still really campaigning for the presidency. Weaver was unequivocal.

"Yes, he is. Yes, he is. Yes, he is," he said. "He is an active candidate for president, yes."
