Massachusetts police officer shot, killed

AUBURN, Mass., May 22 (UPI) -- Investigators have identified the Auburn, Mass., police officer killed while on duty early Sunday as 42-year-old Ronald Tarentino.

Investigators are continuing to search for a suspect who reportedly shot the officer during a routine traffic stop.

Massachusetts State Police investigators said the they believe the shooter fled in a vehicle after killing the officer about 12:30 a.m. on a city street, CBS reported.

Tarentino was taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester and later died, Fox 25-morning-/297944459" target="_blank"> reported.

Auburn Police Chief Andrew Sluckis, on Sunday afternoon, called the killing a "tragic loss," describing Tarentino as a "dedicated and brave public servant" who leaves behind a wife and children, ABC News reported.

Sluckis said the investigation into Tarentino's slaying is ongoing and declined to release additional information about the gunman at the news conference.

Investigators remained on the scene Sunday morning.

Fox released raw video on Twitter of a reported eye witness who said he heard six or seven shots fired.

"It was just loud, really fast, like boom, boom, boom, boom, boom," the man said.
