WACO, Texas, April 27 (UPI) -- Pilgrim's Pride Corp. has recalled more than 4.5 million pounds of fully cooked chicken products because of extraneous metals and plastics, the company's second recall this month.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced the recall Tuesday.

According to the USDA, the extraneous materials included plastic, wood, rubber and metal. The department took the action after consumer complaints.

The USDA urged consumers who have purchased the products not to consume them, and to throw them away or return them to where they were purchased.

Consumers with questions about the recalls were urged to contact James Brown, consumer relations manager for the company, at 1-800-321-1470.

Pilgrim's Pride notes on its website that one in five chickens in the United States is from the company.

"Pilgrim's has the capacity to process more than 34 million birds per week for a total of more than 7 billion pounds of live chicken annually," according to the corporate website.

Earlier this month the company recalled more than 40,000 pounds of chicken nuggets because of similar consumer complaints. They were not sold for retail and mainly sold to schools.
