LITTLE ROCK, Ark., April 8 (UPI) -- Two guards at an Arkansas prison shot and killed a man convicted of two murders as he allegedly tried to escape from the maximum-security facility, officials said.
The guards shot Christopher Wilson, 41, Thursday at the Varner Unit of the Arkansas Department of Correction as he allegedly attempted to escape. Wilson was pronounced dead at the scene.
"Officers gave him a demand to cease his activity, and he failed to comply," said department spokesman Solomon Graves.
Details of the alleged escape attempt were not disclosed, pending a state police investigation.
Graves said the guards, who have been placed on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete, followed all protocols. The prison is conducting it's own internal review as well.
The last time an inmate was killed by a corrections officer in Arkansas was 1991, the ADC said. The last time an inmate died during an escape in Arkansas was 2013 at the Varner Unit.
