FORT WORTH, Texas, March 17 (UPI) -- Several birds at the Fort Worth Zoo were killed in a hailstorm, officials said.

A spokeswoman for the Fort Worth, Texas, zoo said five flamingos, a pelican and a couple of other smaller birds were found dead inside exhibits at the zoo after a monstrous hailstorm hit the area early Thursday.

"It was a difficult morning to come in and discover those things," zoo spokeswoman Alexis Wilson said.

The zoo delayed its opening until noon Thursday and posted pictures on social media showing the grounds covered in hailstones.

The storms also damaged vehicles parked in the area. Tennis-ball-sized hail was found near the campus of Texas Christian University. The roof of a police precinct was also damaged, causing the station to flood.
