CHICAGO, March 15 (UPI) -- Three police officers were shot during a confrontation in a Chicago apartment courtyard Monday night, police said. The attacker was shot and killed. All three officers are expected to recover.

The officers might have been investigating three people in the Homan Square neighborhood when the shooting took place shortly before 10 p.m., police told the Chicago Tribune.

One offices was shot shot in the back, another in the foot and the third in the chest, though the bullet might have struck the bullet-proof vest. Only one of the officers is in serious condition, authorities said.

The shooting takes place just a day after a shootout in front of a Washington D.C.-area police station left one officer dead.

The number of officers shot or killed in the line of duty has been somewhat in decline in recent years after highs of nearly 200 officers being shot and 70 dying in 2007, and more than 150 officers shot and 73 being killed in 2011. More than 100 officers were shot and 42 of them killed in 2015, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
