Sen. McCaskill announces 'good prognosis' in breast cancer fight

WASHINGTON, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and expects a full recovery.

The 62-year-old Democrat revealed the news Monday in a post on her Tumblr account..

"I very recently learned that I have breast cancer. It was detected through a regular mammogram. It's a little scary, but my prognosis is good and I expect a full recovery. I will be in St. Louis for the next 3 weeks receiving treatment," she wrote.

She immediately received words of encouragementt from a number of colleagues, including Sen. Lindsay Graham, R-S.C., and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who wrote "If ever cancer picked the wrong person to mess with, it's you."

Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., tweeted, "From one breast cancer survivor to another soon-to-be survivor -- you're a fighter and I'm cheering for you all the way."

McCaskill was elected to the Senate in 2006, and serves on the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs and Armed Services Committees, among others.
