'Big Short' director hopes Hillary Clinton sees his film

WASHINGTON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Adam McKay, director of The Big Short, which chronicles the 2008 financial collapse, is a supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders but hopes Hillary Clinton sees the film.

"I'm really curious if she's seen the movie," McKay told Politico, detailing his issues with Clinton's relationship with Wall Street. "I'd really like her to see it."

Sanders has called it an "excellent film." Another fan: Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who invited McKay to her office on Capitol Hill after seeing the film last month.

"I loved The Big Short as much as I could possibly love a movie about greedy Wall Street bankers who cheated working families, broke our economy and didn't go to jail," she said. "It was great to have Oscar-nominated writer and director Adam McKay stop by my office today to talk about his powerful film. We both agree: The Big Short should add energy to the push for real accountability in our broken financial system."

The Academy Award-nominated film, based on the book by Michael Lewis, chronicles the housing and credit bubbles that burst in the early 2000s and contributed to the market crash. In the years that followed, major "too big to fail" banks were bailed out by the federal government.

Despite McKay's criticism of Clinton's policies -- like her opposition to re-implementing Glass-Steagall, legislation that required banks to separate commercial and investment banking -- he said he'd likely vote for her if she wins the Democratic presidential nomination.

"Obviously, if it's Donald Trump, I have to vote for her. I'll probably — it bums me out, but I'll probably have to hold my nose and vote for her. I'm not a fan of a lot of things she's done. But she's not a wackadoodle," he said. "I mean, she doesn't believe that, you know, mankind was created 5,000 years ago. [...] If it's Ted Cruz or Donald Trump, I have to vote for her."
