CHARLOTTE, N.C., Jan. 23 (UPI) -- A North Carolina man was shot dead while attempting to help a driver whose car slid off of an icy road, police said.

Marvin Lee, 27, was arrested on a charge of murder after a standoff with local authorities and SWAT that lasted several hours.

Police said Jefferson Heavner, 26, and two others attempted to help Lee after his car slid and crashed due to icy road conditions. Lee became belligerentand the three men decided to call the police, authorities said.

Lee allegedly fired an automatic pistol at the men as they attempted to call police. As they ran, a bullet struck Heavner. He fell to the ground as Lee approached him and shot several more times, police said.

"They thought he was drunk or on dope and said 'let's just call the law and let them deal with it'," Sheriff Coy Reid told the Charlotte Observer.

After the shooting, Lee returned to his car and refused to get out until SWAT arrived and found him passed out, police said.

Lee is scheduled to appear in court on Monday as police investigate the shooting.
