TOPANGA, Calif., Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Authorities in California said they removed a "military-grade ordnance device" discovered by landscapers digging up a residential back yard.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Malibu/Lost Hills Station said deputies responded to a Topanga back yard about 5:03 p.m. Saturday on a report of suspended military ordnance being discovered by landscapers.

Deputies arrived to find "a military-grade ordnance device, which measured approximately 30 inches in length."

The area was cleared of bystanders and members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Arson/Explosives team took possession of the device, which investigators said appeared to be inert.

The object showed some signs of aging, but investigators did not offer any theories on the age of the device or how it came to be buried in the back yard.
