CHICAGO, Jan. 15 (UPI) -- Newly released video from the Chicago Police Department shows an officer shooting an unarmed 17-year old as he ran from police, stoking further outrage in a the city reeling from a string of controversial police-involved shootings.

The video, made public nearly two years after the shooting and only after public outcry, shows Cedrick Chatman running away from Officer Kevin Fry on Jan. 7, 2013, after an alleged carjacking. Fry said he opened fire on Chatman because he thought the teen was carrying a weapon. The object was a black iPhone box.

The video, captured by a nearby surveillance camera, shows Fry pulling a weapon in an intersection and Chatman collapsed in the street. Two bystanders who walked near the line of fire can be seen running away. Fry's partner, Officer Lou Toth, is also seen standing over Chatman with his foot on his back.

The Chatman family attorney said the video contradicts police statements the teen pointed a dark object at the police, prompting the police to shoot. They are outraged it took Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel's office years to release the video.

The controversy over the Chatman video began days after police released the dash-cam video of Laquan McDonald, shot 16 times by police on Oct. 20, 2014. Officer Jason Van Dyke pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
