Sen. Bernie Sanders pushes past Clinton in New Hampshire poll

WASHINGTON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders is leading former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in New Hampshire by 13 points despite still lagging on a national level, a new poll found.

Fifty percent of those surveyed in a Fox News poll released Friday said they would support Sanders, I-Vt., for the Democratic nomination. That's compared with 37 percent who say they would support Clinton in the early voting state.

A national poll also released by Fox on Friday showed Clinton maintaining a lead in the Democratic field with 54 percent to Sanders' 39 percent. The same poll taken in November had Sanders at 31 percent to Clinton's consistent lead in the mid-50s.

Former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley polled at 3 percent nationally as well as in New Hampshire.

Among Republicans, Donald Trump leads in New Hampshire with 33 percent, followed by Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., with 15 percent. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, comes in third with 12 percent.

The national numbers have Cruz is second place with 20 percent and Rubio in third with 13 percent. Trump maintains front-runner status with 35 percent.

Both polls were conducted between Jan. 4 and Jan. 7. The national poll surveyed 1,006 registered voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percentage points. The New Hampshire poll surveyed 800 likely New Hampshire primary voters with a margin of error of +/- 4.5 percentage points.

The New Hampshire primary is the first in the nation, scheduled for Feb. 9, little more than a week after the Iowa caucuses.
