Carson campaign overhauls after 5 staffers quit

WASHINGTON, Jan. 1 (UPI) -- Trying to minimize the fallout from five campaign departures, Republican presidential hopeful Ben Carson is changing his approach.

Carson's campaign leadership resigned Thursday, leaving the candidate a month to regroup before the Feb. 1 Iowa caucuses.

Retired Major Gen. Robert Dees, the new campaign chairman, told CNN Friday that a more aggressive strategy is on the way.

"We've had a policy engine that was idling," Dees said. "We're going to [...] allow the people of America to really see what Ben Carson really believes about certain things."

Armstrong Williams, business manager for the Carson campaign, said voters can expect to see a tougher side of the candidate.

"He's soft-spoken and sometimes people confuse soft-spokenness with not being strong enough," Williams said. "There will be more fire in his belly."

Carson had an early lead until questions arose about whether he fabricated details of his life story. In light of terrorist attacks in Paris, Carson struggled with foreign policy questions, which dragged him down to fourth place in the polls, according to RealClear Politics.
