MIAMI, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Passengers aboard the Carnival Ecstasy cruise ship watched as blood poured down elevator doors after a crew member died while trying to repair the lift.

Matt Davis of Fort Myers, Fla., shot video of blood streaming down the closed elevator doors as onlookers watched in disbelief. Davis said the area smelled like blood and sounded like a rainstorm.

The video, featured on WFTX-TV in Fort Myers, contains graphic images.

"To look and see the elevator with just blood coming down like a sheet, and not stopping ... it was a real life scene of The Shining," Davis said, referring to the 1980 horror film.

Ship electrician Jose Sandoval Opazo, 66, died Sunday while trying to repair the elevator, Carnival said.

"The company extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and loved ones of our team member," Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen said. "Appropriate authorities have been notified and a full investigation into the cause of the accident is underway."
