OLYMPIA, Wash., Dec. 9 (UPI) -- Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Wednesday declared a state of emergency due to severe weather that has wreaked havoc in the Pacific Northwest, officials said.

Heavy rains have soaked the state for more than a week, causing severe flooding and dangerous landslides.

"Due to severe storms across [Washington], I've declared a state of emergency," Inslee tweeted late Wednesday.

The emergency covers damage caused by weather that began Nov. 30, the governor said in a news release Wednesday.

"There are people in need across Southwest Washington and the rest of the state and we're here to provide whatever assistance the local communities require," Inslee said. "We're in this together."

Landslides have closed major highways across the state and strong winds have knocked out power for thousands of residents, officials said. Roads, homes and other property have also sustained flood damage over the last 10 days.

The most severe flooding has occurred in Cowlitz, Lewis and Snohomish counties in the southern part of the state, near its border with Oregon. Wind and flood advisories have also been issued in Eastern Washington.

Inslee's proclamation directs the Washington Military Department to coordinate a widespread response to the severe weather. It can also be used to activate the Washington National Guard and it's a step required in requesting federal assistance, if state officials ultimately believe that is necessary.

The State Emergency Operations Center was also activated at a Phase III alert level on Wednesday, Inslee's office said.

"As heavy rain, wind & snow sweep through WA, please stay alert and be safe," Inslee said in another tweet.
