JALALABAD, Afghanistan, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Twelve people, including five military personnel, were killed early Friday when a U.S. military transport plane crashed in Afghanistan, a U.S. military official said.

The plane, a C-130, crashed just after midnight local time near Jalalabad airport, coalition spokesperson U.S. Army Col. Brian Tribus said. C-130s are four-engine turboprop planes used for transporting personnel and cargo.

Of the 12 dead, five were the U.S. military crew of the aircraft, five were civilian contractors and two were Afghan civilians killed on the ground, Tribus said. The contractors were part of the NATO-led "Resolute Support" mission to train and advise Afghan solders after U.S. combat operations ended in 2014. Forward Operating Base Fenty is located in Jalalabad and has served as a major operations center for the past decade.

The cause of the crash has not been determined, but there were no reports of hostile fire in the area, Tribus said.
