DES MOINES, Iowa, Aug. 24 (UPI) -- The chairman of Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry's campaign in Iowa announced his resignation Monday, another blow to the former Texas governor, who stopped paying staffers earlier in the month.

Sam Clovis, a former U.S. Senate candidate and talk radio personality, said Perry is a "remarkable man" and wished him well on his 2016 election campaign, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Perry's second run for president has been beset by sluggish fundraising and low polling numbers. Earlier in the month, he stopped paying staff at his national headquarters in Austin, as well as in the early caucus and primary states of South Carolina, Iowa and New Hampshire.

"Gov. Perry remains committed to competing in Iowa, as well as South Carolina and New Hampshire, and there are many people across the country who continue to work to elect Rick Perry as president. We wish Sam the best in his next endeavor," Perry campaign spokeswoman Lucy Nashed said Monday.
