SAN ANTONIO, Aug. 19 (UPI) -- A man in San Antonio, Texas, has been arrested for allegedly forming a prostitution ring where he may have involved up to 30 college-aged women.

Steven Sumlin, 38, who also goes by the name Anthony Lamar, was arrested on Monday and charged with aggravated promotion of prostitution. Sumlin, from San Antonio, is accused of luring college-aged women into prostitution by promising them hundreds or thousands of dollars a day.

Most of the women he allegedly lured into prostitution for his supposed escort service were from college campuses in San Antonio, Austin and Dallas.

He was arrested by San Antonio police after a six month investigation coordinated with police in Austin and Dallas, as well as with the Texas Attorney General's Office.

According to police, Sumlin would threaten women who were attempting to escape the trade.

"Once he has them in his grips, that's where he's got them and they stay there," Douglas Greene of the San Antonio Police Department, said. "This is definitely something that all our college students need to be aware of."

Sumlin also allegedly used Internet advertisements to recruit women. Police believe he may have had up to 30 women as part of his prostitution ring at one point.

"College students are looking for a way to pay for books and their education," Greene added. "He took advantage of the students who would respond to the money."
