Three years later: Colorado theater shooting victims remembered

AURORA, Colo., July 21 (UPI) -- Hundreds gathered Monday evening to mark the third anniversary of the deadly Colorado movie theater shooting that left 12 dead and dozens injured.

Twelve crosses were placed to line the street near the Aurora, Colo., movie theater where James Holmes opened fire during a midnight showing of The Dark Night Rises at the Century Aurora 16 Multiplex Theater. Holmes was found guilty July 16 of 24 counts of first-degree murder and 140 counts of attempted murder. A jury is now determining if the 27-year-old will get the death penalty or live in prison.

Those at the candlelight vigil Monday evening included families and friends to honor those who died. Led by the Rev. Charlene Howard of the Issues of Life Ministries, the vigil featured speakers from churches in the neighborhood.

"Every year I come here on this date, and I look forward to coming back because it fills me up and I can get through another year until I can come back again," said Heather Dearman, a cousin of Ashley Moser, one of the 70 people injured in the attack three years ago.

Several other vigils were held this past weekend to mark the anniversary.
