WASHINGTON, June 25 (UPI) -- The Pentagon announced Wednesday it does not expect to change the names of 10 southern military bases and several other military facilities named after Confederate leaders, saying the namesakes were in memorial of historic figures, "not causes or ideologies."
"Every Army installation is named for a soldier who holds a place in our military history," U.S. Army Brig. Gen. Malcolm B. Frost said. "Accordingly, these historic names represent individuals, not causes or ideologies. It should be noted that the naming occurred in the spirit of reconciliation, not division."
