SALT LAKE CITY, May 31 (UPI) -- Kidnapping survivor Elizabeth Smart welcomed her first child in February, her father confirmed Friday.

Ed Smart told the Salt Lake Tribune that Elizabeth had a baby girl named Chloe.

"It is totally private," Ed said of the late birth announcement. "This is something she is keeping to herself and not trying to have out there."

Elizabeth, 27, became a household name in 2002 after she was kidnapped from her Salt Lake City home and held captive for nine months by a street preacher and his wife. In the years since her rescue, she has become an outspoken advocate for victims of childhood abuse.

Elizabeth married Matthew Gilmour in Hawaii in 2012.
